The History of Emergency Mobile Health Care, LLC.

Emergency Mobile Health Care, LLC (EMHC) was founded in March 1997 by Michael and Bette Arndt, Don Parsons and Tony Ganz. The concept of EMHC was to provide quality patient care and transportation with a locally owned and operated ambulance company.

Beginning with one ambulance and five employees EMHC gained a contract with Saint Francis Hospital on Park Avenue to transport patients out of the facility. Within two years EMHC had contracts with Delta Medical Center on Getwell Road, several nursing home facilities, had grown to a fleet of 9 ambulances and 20 employees. The base operation moved from a one room office on Poplar and Perkins to 1041 Oakhaven, and today now has a 7,000 square foot facility housing all ambulances and daily operations. Each owner found their niche and purpose in the company.

Michael Arndt, RN was also the president of EMHC working on the ambulances providing the higher level of care for specialty transports. Tony Ganz was an RN/EMT-Basic and functioned on the ambulances at both capacities and managed the office staff. Mr. Ganz left EMHC in 2000 to seek a career in hospital nursing. Bette Arndt brought her business background and expertise to provide the financial knowledge and accounting strategies, which were the backbone of this new company. Don Parsons was the Marketing Director. Michael Arndt and Don Parsons worked to market EMHC and acquired contracts with almost every major nursing home in Memphis. Michael Nolen, EMT-IV is the Administrative Director responsible for compliance, billing, and the day to day operations. Michael started with EMHC in 2002 as a driver, completed EMT school and has held several positions within the company.

As the years past and EMHC grew, so did the reputation of professionalism and dependability. By 2000 EMHC obtained a 911 contract in North Mississippi, and was providing transportation for over 12,000 patients annually and employed 40 EMT’S and Paramedics and had 11 ambulances. Along with Saint Francis and Delta Medical Center and seventeen nursing homes used EMHC almost exclusively and we provided over two hundred transports each month for the Methodist Health System. By the end of 2000 we added three hospice groups to our contracted list and were continuing to look for ways to expand our service and meet the needs of the Memphis area.

A wheelchair van was added to the service in July 2001 which gave EMHC the ability to provide a more diverse form of patient transportation. In September of 2007 EMHC added a second wheelchair unit to the fleet. Both units are able to transport two patients along with nine ambulatory patients in a single trip. EMHC is looking forward to expanding this line of business in 2008.

Today EMHC has expanded the employee group to over 75 employees, and treated over 16,000 patients in 2007. We take pride not only to be the preferred provider in medical transportation but a partner in health care with facilities in the mid-south.

Dispatch Center

EMHC has an in house dispatch center with licensed EMT’s and final semester EMT students dispatching. The dispatch center is the heart of our operation equipped with radio systems, pager and cell phone contact to all ambulances. Our ambulances are tracked with a nationwide global positioning system that interacts with our computer aided dispatching system.

Our dispatch center telephone lines are recorded and available to any member of management as their desk for review. This provides us the ability to monitor each call placed requesting a patient transport. All of these technologies have been instrumental in allowing EMHC to provide accurate and dependable service over the years. Our goal is to advance with the needs of our facilities and meet the response of every call.

Disaster Response

The day after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, EHMC was asked to dispatch seven ambulances to Slidell, Louisiana to assist in the transportation and care of the hurricane victims. We had crews staged and working in the New Orleans area for one week and transported 40 patients to Memphis for care during that time, and many to other hospitals within Louisiana for higher levels of care.

Our Fleet of Ambulances

At the start of 2006 we introduced the first fuel-efficient Euro style ambulance in the State of Tennessee. The new ambulances have a yield of 23 miles per gallon compared to the old style ambulances getting 6 to 10. The new ambulances require oil changes every 10,000 miles compared to 5,000 for conventional. We have a total of ten in the fleet this year, and expect to purchase five more in 2008. Our ambulances are equipped with GPS to provide information such as speed and location of an ambulance at any specific time. The system is managed through the internet and holds specific data about each ambulance. Our ambulances are also equipped with Drive Cam cameras which record an incident such as impact, sudden stops, and rough driving. These two features have been very useful when a facility wants to check on a transport or if there is a possible incident. We have had these systems since 2000 and were the first in Memphis with Drivecam.

Ambulance Staff

EMHC is a Class A rated service with the Tennessee Department of Health, and Advanced Life Support Ambulance Service with the Mississippi Department of Health, providing advanced medical care to the Mid-South. Our ambulances are staffed with EMT-IV’s, EMT-B, and EMT-P which meet National Registry and State of Tennessee requirements which are available 24 hours a day 365 days a year. All paramedics are current in ACLS. Our ICU ambulance has the capability of holding multiple medical personnel or equipment if needed. This ambulance has been used many times by the Pedi-Flight team at Lebonheur Children’s Medical Center, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Aeromed Express, Medway Air Ambulance, and ICU JET use EMHC exclusively for transporting patients to their aircraft at the airport.

Annually our Employees attend continuing education as prescribed by the Department of Health and our Medical Director.
